A reoccurring destination for me is the small Greek Island of Crete. As a whole, the island is a must visit for any traveller to Europe. Its beautiful beaches, flawless weather and turquoise blue seas are accompanied by great food and welcoming locals.
One side of the Island is home to Malia (one of Europe’s party hotspots) But, if you’re looking to experience authentic Cretan culture, then the small town of Kalyves – just an hour drive from the island’s capital of Chania, is the destination for you.
The heart of the town is right on the coast, with beautiful restaurants and bars lining the sea front… Thus, you can watch the sunset while the waves lap up against your table. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Less of a tourist trap than some of the more well renowned locations on the island, it’s the perfect place to get a taste for traditional Greek food, such as Souvlaki which is essentially a delicious and flavour filled kebab.
None the less, the food isn’t ‘scary’! I’ve never been the best at trying new foods when travelling, tending to stick with what I know. But, if like me, this is a habit you want to get out of, then Greek food is a great place to start! It’s simple yet elegant, and I don’t recall a bad meal on the Island.
When you’re not filling yourself with fresh seafood, cocktails or souvlaki, you can relax on one of Kalyves talcum powder soft beaches. Or, head into the mountains for spectacular views of the coast.
Those looking for a more action, could visit the small harbour, which offers a variety of different water sports. From Kite Surfing to Canoeing and paddle-boarding, there’s an activity for everyone. Spending a day frolicking in the crystal clear waters surly cant be missed?
So what are you waiting for… get planning your trip to this gem of a destination… But, as it’s getting increasingly on people’s travel radar, I’d do it soon – or the unique and traditional experience just might soon be replaced by big resorts and over tourism!
